Where the bush meets the beach, Saadani is one of Tanzania’s best-kept secrets. At just 1100 sqkm, it’s one of the smaller parks but is home to a wide variety of wildlife. The only coastal wildlife park in East Africa, Saadani is home to fantastic elephant herds of up to eighty strong, healthy lion prides which form part of a study group with TANAPA, the park authorities and ‘A Tent With A View’ based at the wildlife research centre at their Simply Saadani Camp. Guests can learn about the historic and current conservation work before heading out on safari by 4×4, on foot and by boat. Saadani is one of just 2 parks in Tanzania where guests can enjoy boat safaris, the other being Selous. There is nothing quite like easting your packed lunch surrounded by a hippo chorus! This tour offers a very personal, exclusive & informative experience in a beautiful park away from the crowds.
On arrival into Zanzibar international airport, you’ll be met by your car and driver and driven the short distance to the UNESCO world-heritage site of Zanzibar’s Stone Town. Stay at the Maru Maru hotel, a lovely centrally-located hotel with a lovely roof top pool, bar and restaurant. Relax for the rest of the day (bed and breakfast.)
After an early breakfast, you will be transferred to the airport’s domestic terminal to connect with the daily schedule flight to Saadani National Park. On arrival, you’ll be met by your game drive car and guide and transferred to Simply Saadani Camp, a beautiful authentic safari camp located right on the beach and each room having lovely views of the Indian ocean. Saadani is the only coastal wildlife park in Tanzania and the camp has wild bush to its north, south & west with a unique environment of sea, river, mangrove and salt flats. It’s fascinating to watch wildlife here and see how it has adapted itself to cope with these unique conditions. Settle into camp and after a short briefing, sit down for lunch before heading out for an afternoon game drive returning at last light (full board.)
This morning, wake up and take in the beautiful ocean views before walking up the beach with your guide to the sleepy fishing village of Mkwaja. Learn about local life before heading back to camp. After lunch, head down to the wildlife research centre for a talk about the camps’ involvement in the conservation of wildlife in the park from elephant to endangered green turtles to zebra and, most recently, lion. After that, enjoy a bird-watching canoe ride on the camp’s Mafui creek, a lovely relaxing way to end the day (full board.)
Today is a free day to either relax on the beach, walk the nature trails, head down to the canoe on the creek, book an extra safari or simply kick back and relax with a good book on your balcony (full board).
The next few days is all about safaris and finding, in particular the study group of lions in the park. This morning head out early for a game drive ending at the fantastic Babs’ Camp, a 20 metre high viewing tower complete with 2 en-suite bedrooms, bar and restaurant and even a crow’s nest. After brunch, settle in to your new base before heading out later in the afternoon for a game drive in the immediate area before returning to the camp for drinks and dinner prepared by your private chef. Maybe retire to the crow’s nest afterwards for a night-cap before retiring to bed and fall asleep to the sounds of the bush and distant ocean. Lion can often be heard during the night or in the early hours of the morning (full board.)
Awake at dawn for a guided foot safari on the salt flats and learn about the animal prints in the sand which put together a story of what passed the day and night before. Return to camp for breakfast and relax before setting off at non down to the Wami river for a thrilling boat safari amongst crocs and hippo. Enjoy a game drive en-route back to camp arriving at last light for drinks and dinner (full board.)
Head out for a walk on the salt flats before brunch before heading to the airstrip to connect with the 1445 daily flight to Zanzibar for onward.
