Travel to the largest wildlife reserve in Africa by train
Relax on some of the world’s best beaches
This tour is very much an off the beaten track safari experience. It touches the wild Africa of yesteryear and completes the heady infusion on the spice island of Zanzibar.
Take in three exceptional, complementary destinations: Saadani National Park: the only coastal wildlife preserve in the whole of east Africa with a unique combination of wildlife Park, marine park, a stunning boat safari and deserted white sand beaches. Selous Game Reserve: Travel by a local train to the largest reserve in Africa. Teeming with wildlife but still with few visitors, and famous for its African hunting dogs. Zanzibar: Conclude your adventure on the exotic spice island of Zanzibar, sat in the Indian Ocean with clear turquoise seas and pristine beaches.
On arrival at Zanzibar airport, you’ll be met by your driver and transfer a short distance to the UNESCO world heritage site, Stone Town. Arrive at the lovely Maru Maru Hotel. (Bed & breakfast.)
After breakfast, you will explore the sights of Stone Town on an insightful guided tour. The joy of exploring the narrow winding streets of Stone Town is on foot. In the afternoon, transfer to the airport for your flight to Selous Game Reserve. Selous is a park the size of Switzerland at 44,800 square kilometres covering 6% of Tanzania’s total land mass and yet, it is still somewhere you can be out all day and not see another human soul. Selous is Africa’s largest wildlife conservancy and home to some 750,000 animals. It claims Africa’s largest population of elephants as well as healthy lion prides, leopard, giraffe, zebra, wildebeest, Buffalo, hippo, crocs and many varieties of Antelope from the beautiful little Impala to the giant Kudu. It is perhaps most famous for its African Hunting Dogs (known as the bush Piranhas due to their fast and frenzied feeding habits). Almost extinct in the 1980’s, the wild dogs are now back to healthy numbers thanks to some serious conservation efforts over the last 25 years. The terrain is quite different to the dry Serengeti plains in the north of the country with grassy plains, rolling miombo woodland, dense patchesof groundwater forest as well as the mighty Rufiji River running through it. Arrive at Matambwe airstrip where you will find your guide waiting to welcome you and transfer to the friendly Sable Mountain Lodge, a beautifully positioned camp set over two hills. You will arrive for a short briefing followed by dinner. (Breakfast and dinner)
After a leisurely breakfast, head out into the reserve for a full day game drive and boat safari. There is nothing quite like sitting with your packed lunch amongst the hippo pods, crocs and stunning birdlife. Return to the lodge at last light. (Breakfast, packed lunch & dinner.)
Awake for a quick cup of coffee or tea and jump into your game drive car for an early morning game drive. Return to the lodge for a late breakfast. In the afternoon, you will visit a local Maasai boma with long term friend of Sable Mountain, Saita. This is a very personal experience where you will get to meet Saita’s family, and learn about medicinal plants still used today by the Maasai. (Breakfast, lunch and dinner.)
This morning, awake early for a foot safari from the lodge after tea/coffee, exploring the diverse environment from riparian forest on the Sable sand river, miombo woodland and open grassland. This is a chance to watch for smaller mammals, colobus and Skyes monkeys, study the spoor of larger game and marvel at the birdlife, before returning to the lodge for breakfast. Relax and after lunch, head to the airstrip for flight to the spice island of Zanzibar. The flight takes just under 1 hour. On arrival, meet your driver and transfer to the North of the island, to Nungwi village where The Zanzibari boutique hotel is located. The hotel is close to the Mnemba atoll, famous for its diving and Mnemba Island where Bill Gates and family saw in the millennium. Settle into the hotel this afternoon and explore the beach. (Breakfast, lunch and dinner.)
The Zanzibari hotel has been moulded to offer all the creature comforts you could wish for whilst offering a chance to really life as a Zanzibari. Nzore, who is the assistant manager is known as “Mr Nungwi”. His irrepressible smile and good natural allows you to really get close to village life, something which is not easy unless one fully understands the sensitivities of the island. The remaining days are for you to relax, enjoy the peace of the hotel, or book from the many available excursions such as the exploration of Nungwi and its fishing community, historical tours of the capital Stone Town, Spice farm tours, diving, snorkelling, and more. There is also a Spa at the hotel for massages and body treatments. (Breakfast & dinner.)
Transfer to Zanzibar airport for the flight back home or onward travel. (Breakfast).
