Tanzania is blessed with many natural gems. Few countries can match its amazing diversity. Such a rich infusion could not be better showcased than here. Starting at the source of the Nile, Lake Victoria, moving on to the most famous park of them all, the Serengeti, and finishing on the famous spice island of Zanzibar with its world-class beaches and dive sites.
You will be met by your guide at Mwanza airport and transferred by road to Little Okavango camp. Like the famous Okavango Delta, this area is divided by narrow water channels full of tall Papyrus grasses which feed down to the expanse of Lake Victoria. The driving will take you about 2 hours passing through the unusual city of Mwanza which sits on Lake Victoria and nicknamed the “Rock City”, due to its huge boulders scattered across the wider landscape.
Little Okavango Camp is a stone’s throw from the western gate of Serengeti. After lunch and settling in, head out on a gentle canoe ride on the waterways around Victoria Island, and out onto the lake itself. This is a lovely gentle introduction to Tanzania. In the evening, relax by the campfire before dinner beneath the stars. (Breakfast, lunch & dinner.)
After breakfast, head out for a full day’s game drive in Serengeti National Park. Focusing on the area around the Grumeti River, where year round game viewing is excellent. You can expect to see a great diversity of large mammals in significant numbers. Lion, elephant, buffalo, zebra, giraffe are common, and leopard and cheetah are regularly sighted.
Each year starting in May through June into July the western part of Serengeti is home to thousands of migrating wildebeest, on their annual journey back north from the South East. This adds spectacularly to the already fabulous wildlife experience. Return to the camp in the late afternoon, relax and enjoy the evening birdsong before dinner. (Breakfast, lunch & dinner.)
This morning, drive to the local fishing village of Mwaburugu for a guided tour which offers a fascinating insight into life on the lake. Hop into a boat, following the shoreline of the lake and back through the water channels en-route to camp, stopping off at the amazing Little Okavango Tower with its fantastic Weaver, Lake Victoria & Serengeti decks for brunch. (Brunch & dinner.)
After breakfast, leave the camp for another full day game drive in Serengeti National Park, probably heading into the area around the Mbalangeti River in the southern reaches of the Western Corridor, and returning to the camp in the evening. (Breakfast, lunch & dinner.)
Drive to Mwanza in the morning to connect with your flight to Dar es Salaam and onward to the Spice Island of Zanzibar. Transfer by car to the UNESCO world heritage site, Stone Town. Explore the narrow, atmospheric, alleyways of the old town in the late afternoon. Overnight at Maru Maru hotel. (Breakfast & dinner.)
After a leisurely breakfast, transfer to the north of the island, to Nungwi, where The Zanzibari boutique hotel is located. The hotel is close to the Mnemba Atoll, famous for its diving. Settle into the hotel this afternoon and explore the beach. (Breakfast & dinner.)
The Zanzibari hotel is, at its core, a shrine to the Zanzibari people. Its walls are adorned with images of Nungwi folk, its tours focus on cultural immersion, and its entertainment indulges the traditions of the island. Nzore, who is our assistant manager is known as “Mr Nungwi ” and somebody who can bring our guests into the life of the local people, something which is not easy unless one fully understands the sensitivities of the island.
The remaining days are for you to relax or book excursions such as historical stone town tours, Spice farm tours, diving, snorkelling, sunset cruises, village visits which can be arranged at the hotel. The hotel has a wonderful reputation for international cuisine, serving fabulous five course dinners each evening, infused with Zanzibari twists. It also has a SPA offering massages and body treatments. (Breakfast & dinner.)
