Very few people, besides the Maasai, ever walk among the vast herds of wildebeest during the famous Serengeti migration. When the spectacle moves south from the Mara river area in November, many animals cross into the Ngorongoro part of the Serengeti eco-system. Here, exists a human-wild animal relationship like nowhere else on earth. The Maasai have moved for centuries, with their livestock amongst the great fauna of Tanzania and continue to do so in Ngorongoro. Together with a Maasai guide, you may too.
Finish your trip in Saadani National Park, a unique paradise protecting a diverse range of Africa’s great mammals in a beautiful coastal environment. Walking the tidal salt flats, following prints left by animals from the previous night is a thrilling way to connect with nature and touch big nature in the raw.
This departure runs throughout December when the wildebeest are expected to be in the Gol Mountains, Ngorongoro conservation area.
Arrive into Kilimanjaro airport. You will meet your guide and drive to the town of Arusha and check into your hotel for the night where you can rest and recuperate.
This morning after breakfast, you’ll drive a few hours to Lake Manyara National Park, a park known for fantastic soda lake full of flamingos. After spending time in the park on a game drive and at the lake, you’ll continue west to the town of Karatu and Endoro Lodge, a lovely lodge facing Ngorongoro forest which stretches all the way to the famous crater rim. (Breakfast, packed lunch & dinner.)
You will depart early in the morning and pass the Ngorongoro conservation area gate. This is an area of outstanding natural beauty with lush meadows, a stark contrast to the dry Serengeti plains. You will arrive at the award-winning Bush Rover Migration Camp in time for lunch before heading out later in the afternoon for a walk with the Maasai amongst the wildlife. There is a great chance that the great wildebeest migration will be here during this period. Head back early evening for drinks by the campfire before dinner in the cosy mess tent. (Breakfast, lunch & dinner.)
This morning leave the camp early for a full morning’s walk across the plains of the Gol Mountains, through woodland and on towards our finishing point at Nasera rock. You will have lunch back at the camp and relax here for the afternoon watching the surrounding wildlife and beautiful area either from your Bush Rover Suite balcony or the lounge area. Let the wildlife come to you. Enjoy drinks and dinner at the camp. (Breakfast, lunch & dinner.)
Today is a full day in the game drive vehicle exploring the southeastern area of the Serengeti eco-system, known as Ndutu. This area of Ngorongoro is famed for the density of wildlife found in the area at this time of year. (Breakfast, lunch & dinner.)
Head out into another remote area of Gol with our Maasai guide, walking across the plains which could be teaming with wildebeest as well as eland, giraffe, Thomson’s Gazelle and more. Climbing onto rocky outcrops to take in the eerie and beautiful vistas can produce encounters with secretive animals such as cheetah with cubs. Overnight Bush Rover Suite. (Breakfast, lunch & dinner.)
Enjoy another full day exploring this area far south in Serengeti. Once again, the abundance of wildlife usually found here at this time of year is staggering. Lion and cheetah, in particular, are very active during this period. (Breakfast, lunch & dinner.)
As you leave the Ngorongoro Conservation area, you’ll pass by the Ngorongoro Crater rim stopping off to see it in all its glory. The best views are from the rim. You’ll arrive in Arusha after about a 4-hour drive and relax for the night in your Arusha hotel. (Breakfast & packed lunch.)
Today, you’ll fly from Arusha airport to the beautiful Saadani National Park, the only coastal wildlife park in East Africa. At 1100 square kilometres, it is one of Tanzania’s smaller parks but still has a good diversity of wildlife with some very large elephant herds. Saadani is one of just 2 parks that permits boat safaris, a lovely alternative to a game drive. On arrival, we drive to Simply Saadani Camp. In the late afternoon after settling in, you’ll head out for a short game drive and the first look at this pretty park. (Breakfast, packed lunch & dinner.)
This morning before breakfast, explore the surrounding area with your guide and watch some stunning birdlife. From fish eagles, fishing in the ocean, off dead coconut palms, to gorgeous little sunbirds. After breakfast, the rest of the morning is yours to relax. After lunch, walk down to the wildlife research centre for a wildlife conservation talk about historic current and future projects which the camp has been at the forefront of. (Breakfast, packed lunch & dinner.)
Head out this morning for a game drive ending at Babs’ Camp, a fantastic 20-metre high tower in the best area for wildlife in the park. During this safari, you’ll learn how to set a camera trap and why they are an important tool for the guides. The tower has 2 ensuite rooms and a private team to look after you. From here you will explore this stunning salt flats area. When the sea comes in, there are islands where elephants are often seen, hence the name of this area. After lunch at Babs’ Camp, head out again for a short evening drive in the immediate area before drinks and dinner and overnight at the tower. (Breakfast, lunch & dinner.)
After a leisurely breakfast, drive straight to the Wami river for a boat safari amongst the hippos and crocs. This is a lovely way to spend a couple of hours before jumping back into the car for a game drive en route to Babs’ Camp arriving at last light for dinner. (Breakfast, packed lunch & dinner.)
Drive to Dar es Salaam for onward travel (Breakfast.)
